Golden Vale Nursery
History Page Golden Vale Nursery, the Rose City's Rose Grower was established in 1988. Since that time, GVN has developed over twenty varieties of rose, making us a major contributor to rose breeding within Australia. These rose varieties include Emma Clare (a free-flowering pink and white cluster-flowered multiflora pillar climber), Shearer's Delight (a purple-pink rugosa rose with relatively few prickles and abundant hips), Bonnie Jane (a pink polyantha rose), Kelly Country (a pink and white climbing rose), Rose Festival (a light red, double cupped modern shrub), Sean (a creamy pink, single modern shrub) Scotch Heather (a creamy pink single Scots/Hybrid Burnet rose) and Vi Ambler (a mauve-pink multiflora rambler with few prickles). Dozens of other varieties by other breeders have also been introduced or reintroduced, resulting in a catalogue of roses which has a high degree of uniqueness. Also unique to GVN are the rose oil and rosewater production trials conducted from 1998 - 2000, using Damask rose varieties such as Kazanlik/Trigintipetala and Gloire de Guilan, culminating in the writing of a report on the potential of this industry in North east Victoria (and similar climatic regions of eastern Australia). Rose oil, also known as attar, is produced, in the case of Damask roses, from the steam distillation of rose petals. Rose oil is not one particular oil, but rather a combination of many constituent chemicals. It is an ancient industry. Rose oil has been produced for many centuries in the Middle East, Turkey and Bulgaria. The history of rosewater production is even older. The Damask roses themselves are a group of roses unlike modern roses in appearance. They have greyish wrinkled leaves and quite a lot of small prickles, combined with often a spreading, shrubbier habit than modern bush roses (hybrid teas and floribundas). The Damask name comes from Damascus, a venerable city of the Middle East. The most prized rose oil has for centuries been produced in Bulgaria, situated around Kazanlik near Plovdiv. Due to the quality (relative lack of impurities) of the Bulgarian attar it commands a much higher price than the Turkish attar. This is due to climate rather than skill. It was the Turks who introduced the process to Bulgaria in the days of the Ottoman empire and it has hardly changed since. The Turkish industry is centred on Isparta at a higher and drier altitude which inceases the waxiness. Whilst rose oil commands a price which astounds the unfamiliar (up to $18,000 per litre) rosewater is also a useful product in its own right. Rosewater is the precursor (if you like) to rose oil. To obtain pure oil, it is necessary to remove the film from the water after distillation. This is not necessarily a single process. Double- or triple- distillation will improve the strength of the water (although obviously reduce the volume as well). Rosewater is used in cooking, flavouring, perfumery, medicine and aromatherapy. In fact it has a multitude of uses. It is not only produced in those countries that produce attar, but as an entity unto itself in India. Information on Damask roses, their cultivation and production are available from Golden Vale. Please pre-pay your order. Payments may be made by cheque or money order made payable to Golden Vale Nursery, or by quoting your current Visacard or Mastercard details. Late orders (August 20th -28th) are accepted via phone on 03 5762 1520. The cut-off dates for orders depend upon seasonal conditions. Additions to orders are welcome. Please be aware that some varieties could be sold-out. In event of this, substitutes will be provided for all orders where payment is via cheque or money-order. Particular substitutes may be requested. Credit-card orders may also receive substitutes where this is requested. Please note also that, in the event of a cancellation, an administration/holding fee of 25% of plant total is non-refundable. Nor is this administration/holding fee transferable from variety to variety. Orders are despatched according to plant digging times rather than by the time of order placement. As each variety is ready, your plants are stored for you in soil awaiting completion of your order. Thus, orders containing a large number of varieties are, by their varied nature, more likely to be despatched later in the season rather than sooner. A planting guide accompanies all orders. Plants are wrapped in moist newspaper and plastic and boxed. This allows your order to arrive in a suitably fresh condition. Should you prefer to collect from the nursery, please advise us and we shall notify you when your order is ready. Collections arranged for a time outside normal business hours may result in an extra fee of $5.50. All orders are despatched upon consignee's risk. Golden Vale Nursery accepts no responsibility for loss, damage or delays during transit or planting. All claims must be made by the end of this year.
